Electric Engines

This section of the blog is about electric cars and their technology, Tesla is one of the most popular companies that produce electric vehicles and future technology. In this blog, you can find the information’s about the history of the technology and electric engines, current technologies that are already used in vehicles, costs of the newest Tesla model and upcoming productions that will change the future of the transport industry.

History of the technology/engines

​

Tesla is a company that was founded in 2003 by a group of engineers, the main goal was to prove that electric cars can be more reliable, faster, and more practical than cars driven by gasoline. In 2008 Tesla launched the first battery technology and electric powertrain which led to the first in the world fully electric sedan – Model S. This model became the best vehicle in the category of electric cars.  The safety and performance of this model showed the world that electric vehicles can drive from 0-60mph in just 2.28 seconds. Tesla is producing their vehicles at the factory in Fermont, California, and Gigafactory in Shanghai. The owner of the Tesla, Elon Musk is not only producing future vehicles but also is creating a sustainable energy ecosystem by creating Powerpacks, Solar Roof and Powerwall to help businesses and homeowners to provide renewable energy. Tesla plan is to produce more vehicles that are more accessible and affordable to more people [1].

Current Technologies

​

The technologies currently used in Tesla cars are ones of the highest quality features that have been developed so far. Some of them are:

​

  • 360 Rear, side and forward-facing cameras provide maximum visibility.

  • 160 meters Forward-facing radar provides a long-range view of distant objects.

  • 12 Ultrasonic Sensors detect nearby cars, prevent potential collisions, and assist with parking.

  • Autopilot – self-driving capability is now a standard feature in Tesla models starting from model Y. This feature is providing the highest quality safety features such as emergency braking, collision warning, blind-spot monitoring and more without.

 

The interior of the Tesla models is designed in a simple and futuristic way to provide a quality comfort of the drive. The technology features are designed to provide the driver with the capability to be a passenger in the safest vehicle in the world [2].

Costs of cars

​

Model Y of tesla is expected to go on sale in the UK in 2022, the price of the standard range version is 30,000. Long Range All-Wheel-Drive version will cost 39,000-ish and 46,000 for the full performance version. The prices of the models are depending on what accessories and additional features you choose [3].

When the upcoming technologies will be announced

​

Tesla CEO – Elon Musk has announced that the new battery will be 56% less expensive to create. Upcoming technology of the new battery will allow having more stationary storage which will make the range of driving a lot longer than it is now and it is planned to produce it by 2022. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Tesla had to postpone their plans of releasing a new “Semi” truck and “Roadster” sports car and the cost of this car will start from 200.000 dollars for a base version [4].

  • Tesla Semi is the future of transportation, truck with four electric motors will provide power and acceleration that can carry up to 80k lb. Autopilot and safety futures will help avoid accidents, visibility and control will be provided by centred driver position. Also, the costs of the ownership will be lower, the costs of owning the semi-truck will provide up to 200,000 dollars savings in two years. The expected base price for a 300-mile range truck is 150,00 dollars and for a 500-mile range truck, the price is expected to be around 190,00 dollars [5].

 

  • Hyperloop – is a Transportation Technology that will allow travelling from one city to another with speed up to 1,223km/h. If everything will go as is planned, the first passenger trails using a commercial system will be ready to use by 2022 [6].

Electric cars and their technology will significantly decrease car traffics, accidents and gas emission and provide better transportation features. These technologies are the next level of transportation and it is predicted that in the next 20 years electric vehicles will be fully autonomous and there will be no need to have a driver behind the wheel. There are a lot of ideas that can change the future of transportation. Some of the will help with public transport, deliveries, and some of them include air taxi services. There is not enough evidence to mention this in this blog, but it might be announced sooner than we think.
